Our Mission
The University of North Carolina at Pembroke exists to promote excellence in teaching and learning in an environment of free inquiry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and rigorous intellectual standards. Our diversity and our commitment to personalized teaching uniquely prepares our students for rewarding careers, postgraduate education, leadership roles, and fulfilling lives.
We cultivate an international perspective, rooted in service to and appreciation of our multiethnic regional society, which prepares citizens for engagement in global society. Students are encouraged to participate in activities that develop their intellectual curiosity and mold them into responsible stewards of the world.

Working from a strong foundation in the liberal arts, we will increase opportunities to infuse our curriculum with interdisciplinary innovation while promoting graduate research and international opportunities.
Our History
More than a century ago, seven visionary men looked to the future and founded the Croatan Normal School to train American Indian teachers. Today, we honor this distinct history by living out their historic mission of access and affordability to higher education, expressed simply as Changing Lives Through Education.
1887 – Croatan Normal School was established to train American Indian teachers.
1913 – The General Assembly changed the name of the institution to the Cherokee Indian Normal School of Robeson County.
1940 – The first four-year degrees were conferred.
1941 – The General Assembly changed the name to Pembroke State College for Indians.
1943 – Non-teaching baccalaureate degrees were added.
1949 – The General Assembly shortened the name to Pembroke State College.
1953 – The Board of Trustees approved the admission of white students following the Supreme Court’s school desegregation decision.
1969 – The General Assembly changed the name to Pembroke State University.
1987 – Pembroke State University celebrated its centennial.
1996 – Pembroke State University officially became The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
2005 – North Carolina Gov. Mike Easley signed into law Session Law 2005-153, declaring The University of North Carolina at Pembroke as “North Carolina’s Historically American Indian University.”
2012-2013 – UNCP celebrated the 125th anniversary of its founding.
